Prof Shiu Hung Lee, former Director of Medical and Health Department of Hong Kong, visited the Dialogue Systems Group on 26 November 2010 together with Prof Kwong Ka Tsang of the Macau University of Science and Technology.

Professor Lee has extensive experience in public health at both local and international levels.  He has been the founding president of several professional associations including the Hong Kong College of Community Medicine, the Hong Kong Society for Infectious Diseases, The Hong Kong Health Promotion and Health Education Foundation and Hong Kong Epidemiological Association.

Currently, Professor Lee is the Vice-President of the Hong Kong Tuberculosis, Chest and Heart Diseases Association, President of the World Association of Chinese Public Health Professionals, Honorary President of the Chinese Tuberculosis Association, Chairman of the Prevention of Legionnaires Diseases Association and President of The Hong Kong Health Promotion and Health Education Foundation.  He joined the Chinese University of Hong Kong as Professor and Chairman of Department of Community and Family Medicine in 1994, and later as Director of School of Public Health and Primary Care from 1999 to 2001. Prior to that, Professor Lee served in the Government as a health official for 34 years.  He joined the government in 1960 as a Medical and Health Officer, and by 1989 and up till 1994, was Director of Health.  Professor Lee is Emeritus Professor of Community Medicine of the Chinese University of Hong Kong.  He is also Honorary Advisor of the School of Public Health and Primary Care, Advisor for External Affairs of the Institute of Chinese Medicine, and Chairman of the Health promotion on Campus Steering Committee in the University.

Professor Lee has been awarded the Silver Bauhinia Star (SBS) by the Government of Hong Kong Special Administrative Region and a Medal from the WHO in recognition of his contributions to public health. Professor Lee has also been awarded by the Asia-Pacific Consortium of Public Health in recognition of his outstanding contribution to public health in Asia – Pacific Region.

Welcome to Ms Kara Warburton and Mr Masayuki Hirata

Welcome to Ms Kara Warburton and Mr Masayuki Hirata, who have formally joined the DSG as full-time PhD candidates.

Kara Warburton, from Canada, joined the DSG as a PhD candidate after spending 15 years managing IBM's global terminology database and management processes. She has experience in term extraction, terminology management, and terminology repurposing for controlled authoring, computer assisted translation, machine translation, and search optimization. Kara is the International Chair of ISO Technical Committee 37, which is responsible for developing standards for terminology and other language resources, and is a terminology advisor to the Localization Industry Standards Association. She has a BA in French Translation, an MA in Terminology Management, and a Bachelor's Degree in Education.

Masayuki Hirata worked as a bilingual lexicographer for Longman Dictionaries, Pearson Education. He was one of the joint managing editors for the Longman English-Japanese Dictionary projects, responsible for training the team of Japanese lexicographers and signing off the final text for the Longman English-Japanese Dictionary (published in 2007). He was also the project leader for building the Longman Corpus of Contemporary Japanese. Masa moved to Hong Kong in 2007, and he has been teaching Japanese part-time, in CTL/Community College of City University, and in SCPS of Chinese University of Hong Kong. He has a BA in English linguistics from Waseda University in Japan, and an MA in Language Studies from Lancaster University in the UK.

I am happy to announce that Ms Maggie Zhang and Mr John Li have been awarded the prestigious Outstanding Academic Performance Award to Research Degree Students for the academic year 2009-10 by the Chow Yei Ching School of Graduate Studies. Ms Cecilia Cao has also been previously awarded the same cash prize for her academic excellence. Congratulations!
